The figures in "Hurricane Man" are based on sketches for a mural I did on the bar at Sanctuary. I developed the composition digitally, then hand painted it in acrylic. This is the second painting I executed on the back of a drawer. The drawer was chosen for its age, patina, size and shape, and also because dividers in the drawer can function as hidden shelves when the piece is hung on a wall. It was shown at Crown Station in June 2011, at Genome Gallery's inaugural show, "Out of Context" in July 2011, "red + black" at Queen City Gallery in August 2011, and "lost + found" at Espada / Custom in October 2011. This was a commission through City Supply based on an earlier "bird window" featuring North American warblers. In both cases, the birds were rendered digitally in the style of Charley Harper, and then the digital designs were hand painted in acrylic. The buyer requested certain species such as the Brown Creeper, Hairy Woodpecker, Red-Bellied Woodpecker, Carolina Wren, Northern Cardinal, Blue Jay, Rufus Hummingbird, and Eastern Bluebird.
